Artist Statement

Growing up in the small town of Monson, Massachusetts, I entertained myself by drawing. My passion for art led me to the Massachusetts College Art and Design in Boston where I graduated in 2007 with a degree in Art Ed. and Painting. I now live and paint in Somerville, MA.  

I am attracted to paint for its different qualities: Watercolors bleeding together on paper, oils mixing together to create rich hues of light and dark, the immediacy of acrylics. Being flexible has let me explore the potential of each kind of paint. Sometimes I mix mediums together to achieve layers of texture and transparency. When painting I’m concerned with composition, color and line.

 Using vivid colors in an illustrative style, I paint from observation and imagination. Lately I have been painting a series of “Lady Legs.” I am very attracted to the female form. I paint the girl you hate for being beautiful and the woman you relate to for her strangeness. She is eccentric, humble, and provocative. She gives you a knowing glance as you peer into her room like a voyeur. This creates a narrative that gives the girl a life of her own.

For so long I focused on the head and torso of my female subjects, it is as if the camera has fallen to the ground and kept clicking. I convey the attitude and nature of the woman through her stance, style and attitude using only the feet and legs. In previous work I depicted interior spaces with skewed perspective that makes the viewer feel like they are toppling over. Painting a world for my imaginary female heroine is a narrative theme I continue with.
